Kim Cheul

Abstract
Psychological factor has been reported as a common issue for Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS). The evaluation of psychological and emotional status of patient with chronic orofacial pain enables clinician to recognize prolonged negative factors which can complicate the management of pain or indirectly perpetuate other contributing factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the psychological profiles of BMS patients by using the SCL-90-R. Thirty-five patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and 30 controls were included in this study. The evaluation of the psychological and emotional status of all 65 patients was done. They were applied the computerized Symptom Checklist-90-Revision (SCL-90-R) consist of 90-item self-report measure providing general assessment of psychiatric symptoms. The T-scores of each symptom dimensions and global indices between BMS patients and controls were compared by independent samples t-test. In both groups, no statistically significant gender differences were found in the T-scores of all symptom dimensions and global indices. Among nine symptom dimensions, the dimensions of SOM, DEP, ANX, and HOS were above 50 of T-score values in the BMS patients group. The BMS patients group showed higher mean values of T-scores in all symptom dimensions and global indices than control group. Statistically significant differences were found in the dimensions of SOM, DEP, ANX, HOS, PSY, GSI, and PSDI. In conclusion, psychological distress of BMS patients was higher than control group. It seems that the degree of subjective symptoms, the pure intensity of disorder, and exaggerated response style to the symptoms of the BMS patients were more severe than those of control group. Psychological aspects are very important in the management of BMS patients.
